The 1955 Southern 500 was a Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event held at Darlington Speedway on September 5, 1955. Herb Thomas only led 77 of the 366 laps, but that was enough for his third and final victory of the year, as Thomas held off Jim Reed by one lap. Eventual season champ Tim Flock finished 3rd. Stats
