John bar-Zebedee is, according to the synoptic gospels, the fourth apostle that Jesus Christ called, after Simon Peter, Peter's brother Andrew, and John's brother James the Greater. All four were called while fishing in the Sea of Galilee. John and James are the sons of Zebedee. Catholic tradition states that Salome was John and James' mother; however, this is not accepted by Protestants. Tradition states that John was the author of the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and the Book of Revelation. However, only the last of these lists John as the author.
