Debre Demah also known as Dabra Dima or Dima Giyorgis is a Abyssinian monastery located in Gojjam Province. The name Demah is believed to be derived from the Ge'ez word Demah for head or skull. The monastery was founded by Abba Bakimos of Debre Libanos. According to a local legend he drove away a female demon Emmawelad and performed many miracles including one involving a super natural heavenly light, hence his name 'Takasta Birhan' ("Light has be revealed"). Takasta Birhan was succeeded as Abbot of Debre Demah by Abba Tomos who visited the imperial court of Emperor [Yeshaq I]] (r. 1345-1360). The monastery was granted lands by Emperor Dawit III.
