The pancreatic duct is a duct that joins the pancreas to the common bile duct before it reaches the duodenum. For the most part, it carries insulin. Blockage, compression or inflammation of the pancreatic duct causes pancreatitis. The most common cause is gallstones below the junction of the pancreatic and common bile duct. It can also be caused by Crohn's disease.
