The Coronation Street Secretarial Bureau was formed in April 1980 by Emily Bishop and Deirdre Langton, basing the business from Emily's home at No.3, where Deirdre and her daughter Tracy were lodging. Deirdre took care of any typing while Emily took on book-keeping. One of their first clients was pet shop owner Arnold Swain, who took a shine to Emily and they became engaged, marrying in September 1980. The business was closed shortly before the wedding, with Deirdre moving out of No.3, taking a job as Alf Roberts's assistant at the Corner Shop, following the death of his wife Renee. She and Tracy also moved into the flat above the shop.
