Captain David Mill Smith (died 12 June 1928) was a Scottish-born merchant navy officer and local politician in the Leyton area. File:Dmsmith.jpg Born in Arbroath, Smith spent many years at sea, and was twice awarded the Royal Humane Society's medal for gallantry. The first occasion was when he rescued a harbour worker who fallen into Arbroath Harbour in the small hours of the morning. His second medal was awarded for his action while first officer of the Brodrick Castle, an emigrant ship that was severely damaged in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1876. He saved the ship but lost his leg.
