The ability enables Blaine to gain a new ability whenever he is asleep or otherwise unconscious. The new ability gained is usually random, but can also be chosen at will, if he thinks about the specific ability clearly, before sleeping or passing out, to gain it. This is very difficult and can take long time, sometimes years, to control.
