I just read this in Best Destiny ... Naval Construction Contract. The NX from Excelsior (NX-2000) stands for Naval Exploration Extension. According to Star Trek lore the NCC designation was randomly used by Gene Roddenberry who saw the numbers on the tail of a private plane and liked the way it sounded.
