Neopentothal was a hypnotic drug used in the Federation. In 2274, Dr. Leonard McCoy used neopentothal to place James T. Kirk in a hypnoscan in an attempt to break the memory block he acquired on Helva. (TOS novel: The Prometheus Design) Neopentothal was first used in the 1956 novel Time for the Stars by Robert A. Heinlein.
