It's an abbreviation for life points. It's what keeps a player in the game. Most players start off with 8000 life points, with exceptions in the anime, with 2000 in the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh and 4000 elsewhere, and in some conditions more or less. If they reach 0 they lose.
