These ships were first ordered and built under the emergency war programme. They are based on the preceding M class with a few minor modifications. The cruising turbines were removed, the artillery placements modified and the funnels raised. Several were later modified to carry a kite balloon. A smaller subclass with minor differences has also been built by the Yarrow shipyards that sports only two funnels.
