Functional exercises attempt to involve as many elements as possible including balance, multiple joints, multiple planes of movement creating more complex motions. This generally decreases the load on the muscle but increases the difficulty of motor coordination, muscle balance and flexibility; a type of core exercise. A functional movement is the opposite in concept of an isolation exercise.
