It was used to ignite explosive materials, such as mooride polyronite B, which induced small-scale fusion reactions. In 2367, some of these devices were stored aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Night Terrors" ) This detonator was mentioned in the graphics created for the remastered episode.
