Urahara had a Gigai which drains the user of their powers, eventually effectively turning them into a Human. This is the Gigai he gave to Rukia. Shinigami can also lose their Shinigami powers by having their chain link and soul sleep destroyed, as happened to Ichigo and Jirobo Ikanzaka.
