Constitution-class starships had at least two radioactive disposal vents for cleaning out built-up radiation. This clean-up process was known as an AID cleanup. During this process, the engines could not be used. The dikironium cloud creature entered the vent for number two impulse engine of the USS Enterprise and attacked two crewmen prior to entering the ventilation system. (TOS: "Obsession" )
