From the 1920s-40s, the Apollo Theatre showcased plays from the best writers of the time, including A Symphony of Two Flats by Ivor Novello in 1929 and Noel Coward's Private Lives in 1944. These plays often won critical and public acclaim, and established the Apollo Theatre as a credible venue for good theatre. In the later half of the 20th century, the Apollo continued to play host to brilliant plays featuring celebrated actors such as Zoe Wanamaker, Peter O'Toole and John Mills.
