One of England’s most prolific composers, Gordon Jacob wrote this piece to display the musicality of the bass trombone, allowing the player to express many distinct moods. In the first movement, V.I.P., he portrays the entrance of a “very important person.” The next movement, Nostalgic Singer, is a simple yet beautiful melody reminiscent of an old folk tune. The Nimble Dancer movement is a fresh romp with a two-step feel. The fourth movement, the eerie Phantom Procession, evokes the feeling of a group of ghosts or spirits trudging toward their mysterious destination. The piece ends with Derby Winner, an amusing image of the traditional English races. -- James Huff 06:45, May 20, 2010 (UTC) (from the program notes of The Claremont Winds, submitted with permission)
