GM is an example of a good technology being used irresponsibly. The problems are not scientific or technological, the risks are small and are being constantly evaluated. The problems are political, economical and social. Genetic technologies are used to perpetuate poverty, gain control for global monopolies and are not being used socially responsibly. Similarly, the Internet could have been used in a less free way so that the control remained in the hands of media monopolies, if only they were quicker to mandate DRM everywhere. We were lucky on that one.
