Sam was the name Ensign Zak Kebron assigned to one of the four fish in the koi pond in the park where he waited for Erril G'Doh. Sam was "the serenely inscrutible one." (NF short story: "Waiting For G'Doh") Sam is presumably named for Samuel Beckett, author of the play Waiting for Godot.
