Mr Chips was a name used by John Stape in October 2011 to hide his name when booking a viewing of Jason Grimshaw's flat on Coronation Street, in a bid to kidnap Rosie Webster who would be giving him a tour. He made up the name frantically on the phone after seeing a man walk past his car eating chips. When he arrived at the flat, John revealed his real identity and held her hostage. It is possible the alias can be a reference to the short novel "Goodbye, Mr. Chips"' by James Hilton , due to John's love for literature.
