The Perkins 4.270 was a four-cylinder, direct injection diesel engine of 270 cubic inch capacity. It was direct injection; all iron construction (block, head, crank, flywheel and sump. It had wet liners sealed at the bottom with 3 (or was it 4?) o-rings; these sometimes leaked so there was drain hole in the outside of the block to let the the leaking coolant out rather it contaminating the oil in the sump. The crankshaft had only three main bearings, and the cranks was known to break if the engine was overreved, for instance, by letting the tractor run at speed down a steep slope.
