Distortion field is the means by which a spaceship can suck energy directly from empty space itself. Voidhawks accomplish this through the flow of energy inside their honeycombed patterning cells. The distortion field is also used to propel bitek starship through space (a type of massless propulsion). The field is also used to create artificial gravity onboard the ships. It has a limited inertial dampening effect, allowing the occupants of the ship to experience reduced G-forces.
