Nick Carpenter was a terran who serving on a terran starship. Although details are vague, it appears that, along with Jo Muncey, he strayed perilously close to a black hole, despite warnings of caution from an outside source. Although the ship was able to break out of the black hole's gravity for a time, the ship was drawn into the black hole, taking Carpenter to whatever fate awaited him.
