The Shard Memorial was a jutting slab of crystal located on a peaceful, remote planet. It was dedicated to the memory of all the inhabitants of Alderaan, who died when their homeworld was blown up by the Galactic Empire in 0 BBY. Princess Leia Organa, sole survivor of the Alderaanian royal family, visited the memorial at some point in 2 ABY. The shard reminded her of the crystalline walls of the destroyed Royal Palace of Aldera, where she had grown up.
