Mary McAleese (born 27 June 1951) is the current President of Ireland, holding that position since 2003. Representing the Conservative Party, she is the first Conservative President since Albert Reynolds (1985-1991) and only the second Conservative Party President since Michael Collins. Popular due to economic growth during her first term, McAleese was re-elected with 57% of the vote in the 2009 Presidential election, being the first Irish President to win an election without a runoff since the 1982 Constitutional Reforms. McAleese's tenure has been marked by improving relations with both the United States and England, and a strong economic boom in Ireland following the late 1990's economic struggles.
