The third class of German dreadnoughts brought some new innovations. Finally, the ships could be fitted with appropriate turbines, and the heavy turrets were mounted in a more efficient pattern, reducing their number to five. Three turrets were now mounted in the midship line, two were set as diagonal wing turrets, which finally enabled the ship to fire broadsides with ten rounds. One of them was laid out as new fleet flagship, to supplant the pre-dreadnought Deutschland in that role. In addition to the new turbine engines, some of the boilers were now oil fired, allowing for greater steam generation. The five ships of this class, all named after German princes, kings and the title of emperor and empress, entered fleet service in 1912.
