Springfield Telephone Area Codes are the subject of much debate in A Tale of Two Springfields. They are to change the (Quote Homer) "Classic 636" code for 939. This causes Homer much difficulty and problems to adapt, despite "the big radio campaign, those 3 weeks in area code camp" etc. Homer even goes as far as to break away and form his own town as a result. When Lenny and Carl debate the new area code they decided - "The 6 is closer to the 3 which is handy, yet the 9 has less evil connotations in the very religious world we live in"..
