A large, non-tropical area of low pressure formed in the Gulf of Mexico on May 23rd. This system moved into the Southeastern United States on May 26, and started to produce severe thunderstorms. The first severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Fulton County at 2am on May 27. Severe thunderstorm warnings were later issued for Gwinnett, Forsyth, and Cobb counties as the system began to expand. Around 2:39 AM that morning, a funnel cloud was identified near Sugar Hill, resulting in a tornado warning being initiated for Gwinnett county. The tornado would go on to acquire EF4 status, falling just short of EF5 status. In total, this tornado caused 102 confirmed fatalities, as well as 9 missing people.
