The Chip Shop Awards is one of the most controversial international design and advertising award schemes – as it recognises the sort of work which most attempt to ban. Its categories include “Best Use of Bad Taste”, “Best Work for a Client You Haven’t A Hope of Winning” and “Best Work for a Relative or Friend”. Effectively there are no rules as far as the Chip Shops are concerned. Its founders claim all that counts is the creative idea; pure and simple. It aims to give young creatives a chance to shine on the international stage or not-so-young creatives an opportunity to show what they can achieve when freed from normal commercial constraints. In 2008 the awards where chaired by Michael Wolff – now founder of Michael Wolff & Company – but best known for his role in setting up Wolff Olins.
