Karel was a 24th century Cardassian individual who was known to be a cousin of Berat. When Karel and Berat's family fell into disfavor with the Cardassian Union, Karel was one of their number who was noted by Gul Dukat to have been imprisoned. (DS9 novel: Betrayal)
