There are several factors involved in a bad remake: The director and/or screenwriter can make a big difference. For example, who really wants to see Quentin Tarantino remake DuckTales: The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp? I think Malcolm McDowell has better things to do than to play an aging Scrooge McDuck.
