They help translate one language into another to help facilitate the doctor-patient relationship and help in the care of the patient. By enabling this cross-cultural communication they translate not only words but also relay concepts and ideas between languages. They not only have an understanding of the two languages they are translating, but they also have an understanding of the two cultures.
