The Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجُمهورية اليَمَنية, al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), commonly known as North Yemen and Yemen-Sana'a, is a nation located in the southwestern potion of the Arabian Peninsula. Initially gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1918, North Yemen would exist as a kingdom until 1962, when it became a republic. North Yemen united with neighboring South Yemen in 1990 to form the modern day Republic of Yemen. When the South declared independence in 1994, a civil war broke out, ending with the successful independence of the south in 1995. Despite losing the southern governorates, Sana'a continues to claim all of South Yemen as part of its territory (being one of the only nations to not recognize the Aden government).
