P.C. Stevens was one of several police officers who came to Coronation Street in pursuit of escaped rapist convict Frank Riley who holed himself up in 14 Coronation Street with Valerie Barlow as his hostage. He and fellow officer PC Jimmie Conway kept low on the walkway outside the flat door, instructed by Detective Constable Bill Sharp, in charge of operations, not to reveal themselves should Riley look out of the window. Conway told Stevens that Ken Barlow was coming over with Sharp and Stevens sympathised with the husband's plight.
