Sometimes referred to as the Chief Engineer, the Chief Engineering Officer is in charge of maintaining the ship's engineering functions. The Chief Engineer is the department head to which all junior engineering officers report. As such, he or she is responsible for the overseeing of all systems of a vessel and making sure that they are kept in prime operating condition.
