Early in Diablo II Classic's life, lances were highly desired by Whirlwind Barbs due to their reach, damage, and the fact that weapon attack speed was not factored into whirlwind attack speeds. Their popularity has died since the introduction of powerful unique items, elite items, and a nerf to Whirlwind.
