The United States Capitol Building houses the legislative branch of the U.S. government. The design of the current building dates to 1815 when architect Benjamin Latrobe supervised its reconstruction following its burning by British troops the previous year. Over ten years the building has been repeatedly enlarged, most notably by the addition of the large House and Senate wings in 1859. The United States Capitol is among to most popular tourist attractions in Washington D.C; every year it is visited by 3-5 million people from around the world.
