John Joseph Caffrey VC (23 October 1891 – 22 February 1953), was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Caffrey left Ireland at an early age and settled in Nottingham, joining the army in 1910. He was 24 years old, and a private in the 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
