G'ai Solem was one of a number of cities located on the planet Solem, and was known as an Imperial stronghold. Early in the Galactic Civil War, Imperial Governor Malvander Bren chose G'ai Solem as his seat of power. The city, along with the planet itself, was brutally subjugated by the Galactic Empire following the Battle of Yavin. However, resistance to the Empire's rule was strong in the city, and rioting broke out outside Malvander's palace after the capture of rebel leader Yolan Bren.
