USS Gandalf was a Wizard-class experimental vessel on active duty in Starfleet during the late 23rd century. Gandalf was a testbed for an experimental transwarp drive propulsion system ca. 2273. Successful tests of the system led to the construction of the Ingram-class space control ship, and specifically of USS Excelsior, as a larger testbed for the system.
