The Glavnoye Razvedovatel'noye Upranleniy ("Main Intelligence Agency"), or GRU, is the Russian Red Army's foreign intelligence service and its primary counterintelligence service. Control of the GRU and its operations are distinct from the civilian-controlled Ministerstvo Vnutrennikh Del (MVD) and Upravleniye Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (UGB). The GRU controls Russia's most well-known special operations force, the Spetsnaz.
