5 toes on each foreleg, and 4 toes on each hindleg. That fifth toe, the dewclaw, is located a little higher up on the dog's legs. It is sometimes surgically removed by the breeder, and some dogs aren't born with them, so some dogs may have 4 toes on each foreleg. Some dogs are also born with rear dewclaws, which are usually removed. However, some breeds like the Great Pyrenees and Beauceron have double rear dewclaws, which are a breed characteristic and are left on.
