Like its European mythological counterpart, the Dragaeran phoenix is extremely rare, and dies and is reborn in fire ("Phoenix rise from ashes, gray"). Unlike its counterpart in our world, it is real in its world. The House of the Phoenix does not consider a person to be a member of that House unless an actual phoenix flies overhead during the time of birth.
