They are obtained when a character levels up and can also be obtained when defeating any Unique Monsters for the first time in a given playthrough. Nevertheless slaying the same monster again will not give additional Affinity Coins. However, in New Game +, the Affinity Coin is carried over, and one can slay the same Unique Monster in the New Game + playthrough for an additional Coin. Therefore a maximum of 255 Affinity coins can be obtained for the first playthrough; 98 when a character levels up from 1 to 99, and 157 when defeating the Unique Monsters for the first time in the first given playthrough. Then 157 new Affinity Coins can be obtained in the following New Game + playthrough, until reaching the maximum of 999 Affinity Coins.
