When Kelvin fled the hatch on one of his routine outings, Desmond followed him to the cove where he discovered that Kelvin was fixing Desmond's boat in order to flee the island, all the while leaving Desmond to push the button. Enraged that Kelvin had wasted three years of his life on something he didn't even believe in, Desmond physically attacked Kelvin, which resulted in his death after Kelvin's head made contact with the rocks. Desmond grabbed the fail-sage key and ran back to the Swan station just in time to push the button. (Live Together, Die Alone)
