The novelization suggests that Balan's Gap is also the name of a town around Sturmhalten, or another name for the town. Master Payne's Circus of Adventure had to take the road through Balan's Gap on their way to Mechanicsburg because their preferred route — through Passholdt — was overrun with monsters and the bridge to the town was destroyed.
