Herring Cove is located south of Halifax. Part of Halifax County, fire protection was provided by the Spryfield Fire Department until 1969, when Spryfield became part of Halifax. Anticipating the loss of the Spryfield FD, Herring Cove residents formed the HCDVFD in 1968. In 1996, it and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
