The 'Durek Gambit was a Cardassian starship tactic. The tactic was developed during the Federation-Cardassian War and was designed to allow them to penetrate a target's shields more easily. The Cardassian vessel moves extremely close to the target so that their shields touch momentarily but without the vessels colliding. At the moment the shields at touching the Cardassian vessel fires at the point of contact. The hope was that the contact would momentarily weaken the shields enough to allow for the weapon's fire to bypass the shields and strike the hull.
