You must be playing the story mode (Shipwrecked and Single) and have completed the story line up to completing your raft. When it appears to be complete, the volcano will erupt, burning your sail. Go to the research facility and pick up the old parachute, take it back to the Village Residence and attach it to your raft. Only then can you proceed to Volcano Island.
