The Chosen One was an ambiguous prophecy which claimed that one would "bring balance to the Force. The most common Jedi interpretation was that there would be one person who would defeat the Sith forever, as they considered the dark side of the Force to be unnatural and a perversion of the Force. Another Jedi belief was very similar, but specified that there were many Chosen Ones for every era, and that the Sith would never truly be killed. The Sith themselves believed that there would be one who would, in contrast, destroy the Jedi and therefore make the Dark Lords stronger.
